Carolina Kitchen offers a down-to-earth Southern dining experience right in Upper Marlboro, blending classic comfort food with a welcoming, community-minded atmosphere. This spot serves hearty Southern staples, from smothered pork chops and fried chicken to a variety of sides like mac and cheese, collard greens, and sweet potatoes that reflect traditional flavors without pretense.

The restaurant’s setup is casual with a self-seating arrangement and a buffet-style line where you can see your options before ordering—a practical approach that suits groups and families looking for a relaxed lunch or dinner. The pace here is unhurried; the service manages to feel personal even when the place is busy, partly thanks to friendly staff who take the time to make you feel comfortable. Gospel music plays softly in the background, adding warmth and a sense of place to the environment.

This location draws a diverse crowd, including locals who appreciate a steady stream of well-executed soul food dishes plus those in town passing through the DC/Maryland area. Portions are generally generous, especially the meat and main plates, making it a good spot for anyone seeking filling meals. Vegans and vegetarians will find a thoughtful selection of options here too, which isn’t always common at Southern restaurants.

Expect some busy moments especially during lunch hours, but the atmosphere remains lively and communal. It’s a space where you might see groups gathering to catch up or families settling in for a comforting dinner. Portions of vegetables and cornbread can be on the modest side compared to price points, a detail to keep in mind if you’re budgeting, but the quality and flavor tend to maintain loyalty among returning guests.

Overall, Carolina Kitchen is a practical choice for those wanting authentic Southern flavors without fuss, served in a setting that honors community and cultural roots. Late mornings through early evenings on weekdays or weekends are ideal times to drop by, avoiding the busiest waves while still soaking in the steady warmth of the place.

Just has the most delicious lunch. Had the salmon, and it was perfectly cooked. The portions are generous and food is servef warm. The new location and interior is soo welcoming, and filled with warmth. The music is a nice touch. BTW they have a large vegetarian and vegan menu. That was really special to see how much in selection they offered.

I will always support my community and African American–owned businesses. I truly love Carolina Kitchen, but I’m disappointed by how the portion sizes don’t match the prices—especially the smaller veggie portions and even just one small cornbread. I won’t stop supporting them, but it hurts to feel like our own community is being taken advantage of by those we support the most.

WOW! The staff was super friendly, the decorations were really cool, and the food was so incredible! The place was steadily busy and at the same time everyone made you feel like you were the only one there ordering. I did not feel rushed. I would definitely go here again, next time I'm in town!

Soul food. You seat yourself. About 12 of us, small sections. Warm welcome once in line. Its a buffet server style. You order what you want in a line and get to see the food. Order BBQ, mac and greens. Didn't care too much for the mac and cheese. Catfish was a 20 minute wait so My husband ordered whiting, black eyed peas and yams. Not complaining from him. The honey butter cornbread and desserts stole the show. Cost about $20 person people. No waiters and no trash cans.

5/5 stars all around the board! From Pittsburgh, PA but in DC/Maryland often. I’ve been to the other locations, but this was my first time at THIS location. Service and food was great! LOVED LOVED the gospel music playing while I ate my food (heard it from the parking lot). Making this my NEW fav location.
